Quincy Quarry Weekly Fish Wrap: A rough week for local school officials.
Especially for Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch given that as mayor he is thus also the Chair of the School Committee.
First up, last Friday’s walkout protest by students at Quincy High School.
The reason for the walkout?
Said to be long-ongoing racial discrimination, sexual harassment, other sorts of related abuse, as well as various more general concerns about their personal safety.
Serious allegations notwithstanding, when things hit the fan, Mayor Koch was nowhere to be seen, much less made himself available to the media for comment.
Eventually, however, in the wake of pointed hectoring, Mayor Koch finally made himself available to the South Shore broadsheet on Monday after over seventy-two hours of laying low.
Even so, in spite of speaking remotely with the broadsheet and thus disingenuously circumscribing Q&A surely working from yet another prepared rote script all but assuredly written by others script, one can still only properly say that yet again he still managed step in it by posing all manner of curious rationales, if not also flimsy excuses.
For example, in point of fact, so what for the fact that the students were protesting often long known problems and for which for the most part one can readily argue that Koch did nothing of consequence to address in his role as the Chief Executive for all essentially all municipal activities conducted by the City of Quincy.
And then Mayor Koch ducked backed into the Kochbunker and so returned to MIA status during Monday night’s flack catching Parents and Guardians Forum.
In turn, doing so turned out to be disingenuously helpful for Mayor Koch as later this week word was published that students at Point Webster Middle School were planning their own walkout out of classes to protest a racist video purportedly made by three of its eighth-graders.
Next up, what would be a bad week in the Q be without a traffic exposé?
Actually, in this case, this story is more on the order of a Dickensian story of the Christmas fast approaching: the Generals Bridge in Quincy Center will likely finally be opened to the public even though if was feted with at least a two day and upwards of $250,000 or even more dedication over two months ago.
Specifically, per Quincy Quarry News’ review of the now looking to be close to finally be finished bridge found all manner of safety concerns.
Most were pedestrian safety concerns but some were vehicular traffic concerns arising from how pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow is all too often ill-configured in the Q.
And for the final bit of troubling local news of the week, with the cold time of the year on the horizon, COVID-19 looks to perhaps be making a comeback in the Q.
In this case, kindergartners at a local grammar school tested positive for COVID-19 and were sent home to quarantine until such time as they test negative.
Needless to say, Quincy Quarry’s ever-growing legions of loyal readers can count on the Quarry to fearlessly turn over whatever stones it may happen upon as it relentlessly works the Q.
Change is a comming
