Barely more than a week after the installation of the new slate of city councillors were sworn into office, one of the mayor’s former super majority of obsequious vassals on the council has been appointed to a senior position in the Koch Maladministration and which comes with a six-figure salary.
The position? Director of Emergency Management. The department has but two employees — the director and an operations manager.
The position opened up when the former director was fired over charges of domestic violence,
So what — apparently — for the fact that the charges are still working their way through the courts and thus leaving the city open to potential litigation over wrongful termination should the charges end up dropped.
In any event, this sort of hack hire is not without precedent. In fact, such is arguably all but standard operating procedure.
For example, the former Ward One ward heeling predecessor was hired to a mid-level city job after she lost her job as the Chief of Staph for a now former mayor of Braintree when he also lost his reelection bid.
In any event, the new acting director is looking at a near four-fold pay pop late in his career at the public trough as well as that it would appear per the city budget that the job also comes with a city ride.
The four-fold raise would also appear to set a new record locally on a percentage basis as regards his potential pension pop if the new acting director can last three years at a gig which one of the mayor’s aunt’s once held and was paid roughly half as much to do so.
The potential maximum pension pop will also set a new record on a dollar basis.
Granted, this latest mayoral hire has plausible merit; at the same time, it is only fair to note that this hire of one of mayor’s former vassals on the council was made without appearing to have entailed a formal search.
And as for who next among the mayor’s former vassals on the city council might be hack hired into a no heavy lifting sinecure, the touts at the Quarry are anticipating that the former council president is surely on a short list of one to head Quincy Fiber if and when it might actually be launched

Open for business as usual
A Quincy Quarry News meme
So what apparently for the fact that Braintree relatively recently sold its municipal broadband cable service as its operations were not cutting it, not to mention that the City of Quincy’s finances are shaky at best these days.
Then again, what is the Koch Administration if not a half-way house for busted out political officeholders and even their former staff at times.

My bet is the next “solon” up is the recently deposed Ward 4 councilor who will land a cushy job in the Quincy public sector.
Meanwhile the Director of Coastal Resiliency & Sustainability is working on a project to install EV chargers in public parking spots (even if they are not near the coast).
John,
Public Buildings is a prime opportunity to work side hustles.
And as for EV chargers, is there public parking near the Hofbrau?
Since this publications inception, I have never read not one time,EVER, positive article about the current mayor of Quincy.
My prediction is that he will go down in Quincy’s history as the most proactive mayor who has done an amazing job there his entire tenure.
All you have to do is simply drive through the city and take a good look at an incredible success story. He will make mayor de Kiesza look like a totally amateur. Quincy has been blessed by his tenure. His critics have way too much time on their hands. Kind of similar to his most recent predecessor.
“… blessed” by his tenure.” Interesting choice of words. You know, statues, Men of Divine Mercy, lack of separation of church and state, etc.
But, but — the steak tips were delicious!!!
Neil,
Respectfully, “… facts are stubborn things.” The Quarry has a long history of breaking consequential exposés that the local tabloid would never duly report.
And as for Mayor Koch’s proactive actions, all one has to do is look at his redevelopment of Quincy Center to see how such actions by him have foundered.
Koch long talked up how redeveloping Quincy Center would pay for itself, however, two springs ago one of his consultants noted at a city council meeting that the redevelopment of Quincy Center would run $25 million in the red before it might start running a steady positive years down the road — a $25 million negative which local taxpayers will be stuck subsidizing.
Given the passage of time and better cost accounting, however, this negative is more likely to run a couple to as much as a handful of times more before positive tax revenue happens around mid-century and then take until near the end of the century before the negative might be recouped, albeit without interest.
And speaking of shortfalls, Koch’s bailout plan for the city employees’ pension fund hasn’t worked out as planned and local taxpayers are thus further being hit with funding city employees’ pensions, pensions which are supposed to be self-funded c/o employee paycheck deductions.
Koch has also increased the city’s debt burden by north of a billion dollars and such is a key reason why Standard and Poor slapped Quincy with two adverse credit reports last year and at least another adverse report is likely this year. He also has further worsened the city’s structural budget deficit something fierce given his free-spending ways.
In turn, City of Quincy spending will have to be trimmed in coming years when Prop 2 1/2 spending limits hit while at the same time local property taxes will concurrently be soaring.
Next up, there are over a half a dozen of lawsuits against the city in the courts, two of which alone are likely result in local taxpayers stuck with covering likely upwards of tens of millions in damages awarded given various inexcusable kochings-up by city officials.
And finally, Amelio’s last name is spelled Della Chiesa.
Neil,
The fact of the matter is that the mayor is a genuine red, white and blue nepo-baby, born on 3rd base at Adams Field.
He’s not very smart, has trouble with being challenged, and his condescending tone is, frankly, sickening.
He is absent of facts and his cabinet are scrambling around waiting for the “target “ letters from the feds.
All with Taxpayers Credit Card. Easy Peezy.
Next time Neil, “ just the facts man.” There are millions of stories in the City of Presidents.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
A,
As you will surely concur, patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. That and trust me: do NOT get me started on Quincy’s Flag Day parade.
John,
Rumor has it that the local clam cop told Marge to shove off as well as without offering up a bon voyage.
Might we also see the soon the be ex Norfolk County DA on the Quincy public payroll?
Hmmmm?!?!?! Meatball would likely prove to be an upgrade to the City Solicitor’s office.
So, “make it McCondo” gets to belly up to the public trough again.
No doubt the Fab 5 will do a deep dive into all these hack hires.
When the dust settles and the funding has been cut, “chicklets” McCarthy can only hope for a gig as a security guard at Gentle Dental.
So incredibly sick and tired of reading the same old complaints about City Hall and it’s more than capable mayor.
Just ask yourself whether or not your property values have increased to the level that they are today because of the efforts of Mayor Koch. It’s a simple as that …
Neil,
Respectfully, facts are stubborn things and they include that local property values have basically tracked with increases in other communities.
At the same time, the City of Quincy’s debt burden has soared well past other communities and the city was hit with two adverse credit ratings last year and at least one is expected this year as the city’s reserves are down to basically pocket lint while city spending is out of control — this year spending was up by just short of 14%.
And as for “New Growth” in Quincy, Quincy was recently ranked as seeing the seventh most New Growth in the Commonwealth. As Quincy is the seventh largest city in the Commonwealth, such is nothing to brag about; not honestly anyway.
Finally, expect flat to potentially cuts in local services next budget year while at the same time a similarly high property tax increase as was imposed this year with more cuts likely in future years absent approval of a Prop 2 1/2 override.
The mayor loves to publicly belittle the city of Brockton. But, property values in Brockton have increased 215.73% over the time frame Q1 of 2000 through Q2 2025 (source: neighborhoodscout.com). Other cities from 2016-2025; Fall River 106%; Lynn 109%; New Bedford 113%; Springfield 114%; Worcester 115%; Fitchburg 135%; Lawrence 136% (source: homestratosphere.com)
So, Neil, it would be accurate to say that you’re a Koch-sucker?
