Salt-free diet for Quincy streets?
A Quincy Quarry News exclusive photo

Quincy January 2022 bombogenesis Super Storm Prologue: Where is any brine?.

While out and about on Friday during the quiet before the expected to perhaps be a top-five level record-setting blizzard, Quincy Quarry News personnel did not see any signs of what has become a typical prestorm preparation: brining on local main streets.

Spread at the right time in advance of snowfall, brine can mitigate snow sticking to the pavement and so making for more effective snow plowing – think a variation on greasing a pan when cooking French Toast when hunkered down during a blizzard.

MIA in the Q this time?

While the City of Quincy has bringing equipment as well as that city officials have talked up using it, the Department of Public Works has a checkered history when it comes to brining such as what as was not seen done on the day before this storm hit the fan – for examples, not spreading brine on multiple occasions, spreading brine too soon before a storm, and on at least one occasion double brining.

Granted, a big storm is a big storm but any even but modest advantage would be an advantage.

Speaking of big storms, Quincy Quarry’s ever-growing legions of loyal readers can count on the Quarry monitoring how widely local streets will be plowed.

After all, not widely plowing after the first big snowfall event during the Winter of 2015 left very little room to pile up snow from the storms that followed and so caused many local streets to later be reduced to essentially narrow dog sled tracks.
