Industrial strength brining is a bit much for home use

Given what has so far been a mostly rainy winter with but a handful of light and often slushy snowfall events, Quincy Quarry News is following the lead of other area media in promoting the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s tips on Doing it Yourself with Brine.

Brine, a mixture of water and salt, is an effective way to deal with snow and ice.

The benefits of using brine range from mitigating snowfall from bonding as ice to paved surfaces and so making it easier to clear accumulated snow to readily melting away light snowfalls.

As shown in the following DCR video, brine is easy to both make as well as then spread for home use.

This video also provides tips on when, where, and how to use brine!

Additionally, be sure to note that brine is easy to use — once made and put into a spray device, just shake a bit before spraying!

Plus, once made, brine has essentially an unlimited shelf life.

Further, brine can be cost-effective as well as less hard on the environment as a little bit of brine goes a long way to mitigate snow and ice, especially given modest amounts of snow and ice.

Further yet, be sure to note that not only is less salt typically used when applying it as brine, using brine eliminates tracking corrosive rock salt crystals inside or into one’s ride.

In short, while admittedly circumstances dependent, DYI brining is a highly effective option to have at the ready during the winter season!
