Brand new Fore River Bridge stuck open Sunday evening.

The just recently opened new $244 million Fore River Bridge was stuck in the open position for allowing ships to pass under it for nearly an hour on Sunday evening given an operator error made by one of the bridge’s tenders.

Patrick Marvin of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the Fore River Bridge was stuck in the open position on Sunday from about 5:15 p.m. to 6:05 p.m. given an error made by a bridge tender as well as added that “(U)pon learning of this issue, technicians were immediately dispatched to address this situation.”

Weymouth Mayor Robert Hedlund said he feels “slightly better” that the bridge was stuck open given an operator error and not a mechanical problem with the new bridge.

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch, however, was not readily available for comment.  Neither was Mayor Koch’s recently reappointed Director of Operations Helen “Wheels” Murphy and who is intimately familiar with the old Fore River Bridge.
