Hillary Clinton hit with double whammies this week.
First up to bat was a new poll showing her lead over presumptive Republican Donald Trump has shrunk to just slightly more than the margin of error.
Even worse, this same poll further indicated that in hypothetical match-ups against House Speaker Paul Ryan she was trailing by a couple of points and against Ohio Governor John Kasich she would likely be trounced.
And then in a classic case of be careful what you wish for, FBI Director James B. Comey announced that he would not be recommending to United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch that criminal indictments of Hillary Clinton over her curious mishandling of her work emails while she was serving as Secretary of State.
At the same time, FBI Director Comey made it perfectly clear the Secretary Clinton had variously – if not also carelessly – mishandled state secrets, but just not to a point of perfectly clear criminality.
Simply put, former senior Bush Administration official Comey was not going to be accused of playing politics.
Others, however, have had no problems with lobbying grenades.
Even so, so damning was Comey’s denouncement that the New York Times wrote what the Quincy Quarry newsroom has already discerned: Clinton will most deservedly be stuck wearing a Scarlet E on her tunic tops for quite some time to come.
What is less certain, however, is will Donald Trump be able to dine on this feast headed to him on a solid gold platter?
