Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch to unveil his Fiscal Year 2024 budget proposal at tonight’s City Council meeting at 6:30 pm.

One can only assume that local taxpayers who will be stuck with most of the bill for Mayor Koch’s free-spending way will be shaved even closer than was Mayor Koch a few months ago at the annual Granite Communication charity fund raiser,

The council meeting should be streamed via Quincy Access Television (“QATV”), however, QATV’s live streaming of council meetings has been hit and miss over the past year even if subsequent on demand view has eventually become possible.

Regardless, Mayor Koch’s annual budget presentations are pretty much command attend in person events for his coat holding vassals so as to pack the City Council Chamber with a show of force so as to game his budgets through to all but invariably intact as regards what he proposes to spend.

In an aside, it is especially amusing how Kochsters tend to try to avoid sitting near the Quarry News reporter assigned to this annual Christmas in May event for city employees and especially city vendors of goods, series, and funds needed for borrowing to fund the mayor’s free-spending ways.

And in a further aside, Mayor Koch’s FY 2024 budget was supposed to be presented to the City Council two weeks ago, however, apparently the books were not yet fully cooked.

In any event, last year’s spending increase ask was a breathtaking as well as record setting going away 7.7% increase from the previous year and one can only assume more of the same for FY 2023.

Needless to say, inflation will be repeated cited as to blame.

Reasons for ugly again include new union contract pay increases, short term interest rates on around $300 million in annually renewed city debt are soaring, and other outsized spending increases such as the already announced plans to boost Fire Department spending, local taxpayers stuck with most of the bill to cover Mayor Koch’s free spending ways can only expect ugly, especially as the City’s reserves are all but down to crumbs as compared to expected Best Practices levels.

Quincy Quarry News touts yet again making book
An old photo

In any event, about the only real game for Quincy Quarry News at this point is to make book on the over and under for this year’s proposed spending increase.

Accordingly, Quincy Quarry New’s Sports and Gaming desk initially opened the over and under line on this year’s increase at 5%, only to see the line quickly move up to 6.5% with even further movement higher expected even if Quincy Quarry refuses to take bets from City Hall insiders or their straws.
