After a quiet start given the Presidents Day long holiday weekend which then segued into winter school vacation week, things have moved back towards the same old/same old.
At least by the MBTA that is as well as via an unprecedented doozy.
The doozy?
A desperately needed new Orange Line car that was in transit from its final assembly facility in Springfield decoupled from the truck hauling it at 9 PM last night and so made a mess of traffic on 495 in Chelmsford.
While the Orange line car apparently did not rollover and has since been moved into the breakdown lane, at last report it will be left in place until at least after today’s morning commute and so baiting rubbernecking.
Update: MBTA delays removal of new Orange Line train car until the height of rush hour.
A brand-new #MBTA train remains stranded on #I495, but officials just announced a plan to remove it from the highway. That plan will require several lane and ramp closures this evening. Full list: https://t.co/BWFFZsOvdq pic.twitter.com/qBmWOCiYg8

1 thing they don’t tell, the tracks and the “new” cars are off by 1 inch. Might as well be a mile. The T pushed back, but the Feds brought an inspector from the European company, with a gage. The state really objected, but hey, Feds tell them to suck it. The tracks were inspected and found to be 1 inch out of spec. The state ordered a lot of orange line trains, whose wheelbase is 1 inch wider than the existing tracks. Does it seem explainable now, why they come off the rails. Who ordered them?
Johnson,
While Quincy Quarry cannot speak to your one inch error assertion, the new Orange and Red Line subway cars were ordered during Governor Deval Patrick’s administrant. See https://www.masslive.com/business-news/2014/10/governor_patrick_mbta_red_and_orange_lin.html
CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles bid wicked cheap so as to break into the US market and Patrick bought off on this obvious lowball biding grift.
