After Hanukkah and Christmas comes Kwanzaa!

Kwanzaa runs for seven days from the day after Christmas until New Year’s Day.

Kwanzaa is a secular wintertime celebration that was initiated in 1966 by Maulana Karenga so as to celebrate things African America.

Similar to Hanukkah and Passover as well as somewhat so with Christian Holy Week, each night of Kwanzaa highlights something specific to ponder and then emulate in daily life.

Also, similar to Christmas, Hanukkah, Holy Week, Passover, and Ramadan, Kwanzaa includes festive holiday dining.

In fact, the very name of Kwanzaa has its etymological roots in First Fruits, an African harvest festival.

Originally, Kwanzaa was more of a separatist movement and such is understandable given the time of its inception.

Over time, however, it has evolved into a secular non-denomination event as well as is celebrated in at least a handful of other countries.

Roughly six million are believed to celebrate Kwanzaa in the United States and so puts it close to the roughly seven and half million Jews in the United States.

And locally, the South Shore YMCA has long hosted a Kwanzaa celebration.
