Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day so as to commemorate the signing of the formal agreement to end World War I at 11 AM on November 11 in 1918.
The expectation at the time was that the horror of that war would make it the war to end all wars.
World War II then soon enough followed, however, and after it Armistice Day was then changed to Veterans Day.
That and wars continue as well as are Hell on earth.
The way to show veterans respect is to learn from them. Perhaps it’s the importance of order, deference, communication, unselfishness, respect. Or perhaps it’s identifying the threat and running towards it.

As such, honor veterans.
At the same time, do not press them if they do not want to talk about their time in combat.
