Subway service cuts made by the MBTA in June given a then-underway federal safety investigation so as to mitigate safety concerns will continue after the Green and Orange Lines resume rail-based service after their makeovers are projected to be completed next month.

Previously, straphangers had been lead to believe that rail service would return to at least close to higher rates of previous service levels sometime next month or at least somewhat soon thereafter.

The frequency of Blue, Orange and Red lines weekday rates of service was cut in June to essentially Saturday service rates with Saturday service frequency reduced to Sunday rates.

A key reason for service reduction was staffing shortages, especially with system operations personnel.

Granted, before things hit the fan with the feds late last spring, ridership was still down significantly from from pre-pandemic levels; however, cutting service frequency makes the average door-to-door travel time for straphangers even longer and so making riding the T even more unattractive.

Further problematic, various cuts concurrently made to bus service are also expected to continue until further notice and so further making average travel times longer given further increased wait times to make connections for those who also rely on buses to travel to and from their regularly relied upon subway stations.

In other words, expect a fair number of straphangers to be opting to uber it, drive their rides, and/or work remotely as much as possible until further notice.
