Jasiel Correia, former Fall River mayor but now headed to federal prison in New Hampshire, asks a judge to stay free until March or perhaps even longer.

Correia was convicted on multiple counts of corrupt activities last year as well as other related charges and was then sentenced to six years in federal prison.

This is not Correia’s first attempt to postpone going to prison.

Far from it.

Correia was originally sentenced to report to prison on December 3 of last year but was allowed a one-month and a week’s reprieve to help out at his wife’s family business during its peak holiday season.

The judge later granted Correira a further eighteen-day extension until January 28 of this year given the impact of COVID-19 on effecting due process and such.

Now, however, Correia is seeking a further forty-five-day extension on reporting to prison so that he can monitor the impending trial of an alleged co-conspirator in his crimes as well as a claim that the prison where he has been assigned to serve his sentence is experiencing a purported COVID-19 inflection surge.

Needless to say, federal prosecutors are not amused and later this week word from the judge is expected as to what he thinks about this latest attempt by Correia to fend off time in prison.

At this point, however, one can only assume that the third time will not prove to be the charm for Correia.
