North Quincy Red Line station to lose half of parking during construction.
Just when locals could not imagine that local public transit services could get any worse, they of course soon will.
Last night MBTA representatives told Quincy residents that as the T prepares to break ground on a massive mixed-use development at North Quincy Station this month that it then will deprive commuters of more than half of the parking spaces available at the station.
Previously, the MBTA was variously on record that it would insist on the winning bidder for air rights development at the station would be required to significantly mitigate parking capacity losses during construction by arranging for satellite parking capacity.
Now, however, it appears that the winning developers’ parking obligations have all but been waived behind closed doors as well as without any proper public notice.
Previously, the MBTA was on the record promising that it would stagger construction at its Wollaston and North Quincy stations as well as its demolition of its long condemned and so closed Quincy Center parking garage so as to mitigate disruption for local strap hangers.
Then again, given the MBTA’s sorry history with abiding by its schedules, this latest MBTA service fiasco could only reasonably been expected to hit the fan.
.
Speaking of hitting the fan, it would appear that Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch, who is a North Quincy resident, was MIA at last night’s MBTA per-construction public meeting at North Quincy High.
His apparent absence is inexplicable as North Quincy High School is where Mayor Koch received his only graduation diploma and thus he probably should know where the school is located even if numerous reports have it that he was not much of a student.
That and how he lives but several short blocks away from the school.
Mayor Koch’s apparent absence is further problematic as he is also the Chair of the MBTA Advisory Board and which is supposed to be the designated conduit for communities to express their concerns to the MBTA.
Apparently, Mayor Koch instead does not view the impending next round of grave inconvenience imposed upon strap hangers of any concern to him.
Either that or he preferred to duck the slings and arrows of well-warranted public recriminations.
Then again, an even better case can be made that he is abiding by the MBTA’s wishes.
That and also dancing to the tune of the private developers involved with the air rights redevelopment of the North Quincy station who have provided many thousands of dollars in “contributions” to Mayor Koch’s campaign fund.
Further, there is the fact that Mayor Koch is also desperate to see as much growth in local property tax revenue as might be possible for him to facilitate so as to help him cover the nut for his free-spending ways, ever worsening local congestion notwithstanding.

Isn’t it wonderful that the Chair of the MBTA Advisory Board — who is also Mayor of the City of Quincy — is keeping the citizens/taxpayers/commuters of his city so well-informed about decisions that will affect all of them. He can’t even bother to show up when there actually is a meeting revealing the poorly thought out plan to stiff the residents of the Q.
