Indicted Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia given five days to resign.
Under the threat of legal action, Fall River councilors on Tuesday authorized the city clerk to notify Mayor Jasiel Correia, hit with federal fraud charges, that he has five days to resign or he faces a recall election.
Councilors voted unanimously on the authorization, minutes after receiving a letter from a lawyer for Correia claiming they did not have the authority to take such a vote.
The delivery of the letter prompted audible chuckles from some councilors, while others took umbrage at Correia for the latest in a string of legal threats from the mayor.
“We are not going to be intimidated by these tactics,” said Councilor Bradford Kilby.
“This is really turning into a circus.”

Councillor Kilby said he expected the move to be litigated and called Correia “unfit to serve” in office. “He should resign because this is going to continue and continue and continue (otherwise, ed.),” added Kilby.
Correia, first elected mayor in 2015, has five business days – until Wednesday, December 26 – to resign.
If he doesn’t, the City Council is scheduling a recall election. The special election must take place on a Tuesday, at least 65 calendar days after the date the recall petition was certified, which was December 12.
Given that Jasiel has – as have many millennials – moved back in with his parents after he was evicted from his apartment as well as has few – if any – employment options, one can only assume that he will leg things out for as long as possible.
