Era of Fake Video has begun.

The digital manipulation of video may make the current era of “fake news” seem – well – quaint.

If you think Fake News is bad news, wait until you see what’s coming next care of cutting edge technologies’ manipulation of video.

In a dank corner of the internet, it is possible to find actors and actresses from Game of Thrones or Harry Potter engaged in all manner of sex acts.

Or at least to the world the carnal figures look to be those actors and actresses as the faces in the videos are indeed theirs.

This application application of artificial intelligence has almost seamlessly stitched familiar visages into pornographic scenes by swapping one face for another.

In turn, the genre is one of the cruelest, most invasive forms of identity theft invented in the internet era.

At least one of the worse so far, that is.

At the core of the cruelty is the acuity of the technology: A casual observer can’t easily detect the hoax.

This development, which has been the subject of much hand-wringing in the tech press, is the work of a programmer who goes by the nom de hack “deepfakes.”

And it is merely a beta version of a much more ambitious project.

One of deepfakes’s compatriots told Vice’s Motherboard site in January that he intends to democratize this work.

The plan is to refine the process by further automating it such that most anyone could incorporate the disembodied head of a crush, an ex or a co-worker into a realistic looking pornographic clip with just a few simple steps.

And as academic and commercial software labs are developing ever more sophisticated tools – algorithms which map facial expressions and mimic voices with ever greater precision – for non-pornographic purposes, fake videos will continue to acquire an ever greater illusion of realism.
