Coming up a bit short …

On a surprisingly balmy as well as sunny day late in late April yesterday and so ideal for a harbor cruise, the MBTA set sail with its enhanced seasonal ferry service out of Marina Bay that features stops next to Boston’s Aquarium, at Logan Airport’s boat dock, and adjacent to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Boston’s Seaport District.

Accordingly, Quincy Quarry News assigned personnel to monitor opening day on the water for ferry service.

It was a tough assignment as no watering holes in the marina are open along the waterfront before lunch time to while away time between the five morning ferry runs.

Plus, there was not all that many of passengers to count to keep the Quincy Quarry News crew busy for at least a few minutes every hour.

Generously counted, the Quarry is reporting 8 passengers shipping out on the 6:15 AM dawn patrol cruise, 21 set sail on the 7:30 departure, 12 on the 8:35 AM cruise, 4 at 9:40, and but one incoming passenger at 10:45 AM as well as a mother and two small children arriving earlier to apparently be visiting a grandmother who was waiting for them on the boat dock.

In turning, assuming that at least most morning passengers will be enjoying a return cruise in the afternoon after the midday hiatus of ferry runs, figure 49 round trips spread out over 10 fuel guzzling ferryboat round trips to transport roughly but a busload of people.

Even so, there was a photo op as during one of the midday ferry runs an MBTA suit and an MBTA photographers staged a few photos.

Have you seen him recently?

No sign of Quincy’s peerless mayor, however, even though Mayor Tom Koch loves photo ops as well as takes pretty much all of the credit for this year’s upgrading of ferry service to Quincy even though the current level of service has to be running in the red.

Seriously in the red.

Even by local koched-up standards.

For but a couple examples as the bleeding of red ink, the roughly hundred seat ferryboat typically had four crew members aboard and two MBTA workers were “working” landings at the Marina Bay ferry dock.
