Spreading brine — a mix of salt and water — on a road before a snow storm can prove to be an effective step to help mitigate snow and ice accumulation.
At the same time, how and when to use brine requires some thought even if not all that much thought.
For example, it is best to spread brine as close to the start of a snow storm as possible so that it does not dry out and blow away before the storm commences.
Conversely, if a storm is expected to start out raining before turning to snow, brining roads is not recommended as the rain will likely wash away the brine before it starts snowing.
In the case of Quincy’s Department of Public Works, it went 0 for 2 on these two simple decisions when to brine or not to brine is the question.
One, brining in Quincy was already well underway by 11 AM today and thus many hours before snow was expected to fall.
The good news, Quincy Quarry took the under on a 1 pm push for the over and under for brining to commence.
And as the other, tonight’s storm is expected to start with rain in Quincy before turning to snow.
Regardless, road snow and ice clearing workers are looking at some decent overtime for the first time in a long time given the impact of climate change.
That and signs of brine spread provides the illusion of city officials getting out ahead of the storm instead of getting ploughed while watching tonight’s Celtics game.
