Examining the data
A 2000 election Free Republic image

After laying waste to the mud hurled by Mayor Koch against his mayoral election opponent via a recent campaign mailer, the Quarry then took a look at the claims of success foisted by Mayor Koch in the same mailer.

The Quincy Quarry News so found two multifaceted whoopers in the first two pimpings foisted in the Koch campaign mailer.

One is that “Quincy has the best performing school district of its size in the state.”

This claim has two fatal problems.

One, the ten largest public school districts in the Commonwealth, excluding outsized whale that is Boston School District, and which Quincy is one of the ten, most of these school districts are the likes of Fall River, New Bedford, and Springfield with them so lowering the bar.

At the same time, whoever quality controlled the data overlooked the far better performing public schools in Newton, a school district with slightly more students than Quincy.

Then again, perhaps what the Koch Machine meant by a district of Quincy’s size is one strictly as well as exactly the size of Quincy’s enrollment.

In any event, Quincy public school students’ MCAS scores pretty much align with but the statewide averages as opposed to ranking among the higher performing public school districts in the Commonwealth.

To whit, Quincy was nowhere to be seen among the top twenty-five public school districts in the Commonwealth whereas Newton was ranked at number five.

And as for the second at least faux pas by the Koch Campaign, its latest campaign mailer asserted that the “94% graduation rate (of Quincy high school students, ed.) is the highest of any City (sic) our size.”

A 94% graduation rate by Quincy public students is a valid figure, however, Newton again tops Quincy with an over 97% graduation rate.

Then again, perhaps by a district of  “… our size” what was again meant was the exact same size.

Net/net, while most Quincy public schools students do graduate high school, the Koch Campaign still rates a failing grade as regards its above two flat out mistaken local students performance claims.
