Mahoney is finally going to announce her mayoral bid
A Columbia Pictures image not of the Quincy Quarry News newsroom

As has long been expected in the Quincy Quarry News newsroom given for example that Quincy City Councillor Mahoney did not pull papers to run for reelection as a Councillor when candidate petitions were made available last month, Mahoney has just today pulled papers to challenge long, if not way too long, incumbent Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch.

See her formal announcement here and here for her campaign website.

This will be Councillor Mahoney’s third run for mayor and clearly she is expecting that her third try will be the charm.

Conversely, many problems face Mayor Koch’s reelection bid.  They range from his profligate spending, past adverse court rulings as well as likely soon pending additional adverse court rulings, all manner of scandals, and his generally Q-ing up pretty much all but constantly, Mahoney still likely faces an uphill battle.

Reasons include that Mayor Koch has $344,879.65 in his campaign fund account at of the end of last month as well as surely has the ability to raise upwards of at least as much more money from mostly special interests, vendors  who sell goods and services to the City of Quincy, and via de facto mordita from city employees.

In mayoral elections past, Koch has on multiple occasions spent upwards of $700,000 and even more on his reelection bids, an amount over twice as much as has been spent by both candidates in mayoral elections in the ten most populous cities in Massachusetts excluding for reasons obvious the many-fold more populated City of Boston..

At the same time, Koch has repeatedly been found to have been the recipient of illegal straw campaign contributions.

Obviously scandalous problem notwithstanding, given weak state campaign finance laws all that Koch has suffered in the way of sanctions to date is to have to disgorge the illegal contributions to either the state or a charity of his choice; even so, it is still only fair to note that Koch was the primary recipient of illegal straw donations funded by a real estate developer who was hit with a $250,000 fine and the second largest such fine on record for doing so.

Koch is also by far the most named recipient of illegal straw campaign contributions by the Massachusetts Office for Campaign and Political Financial.

Further, most of the over $100,000 in campaign donations that Mayor Koch has received to date via a pair of controversial Soviet-era emigres real investors were received after these developers were also hit with a fine and sanctions by the Massachusetts Office for Campaign and Political Financial for making straw contributions primarily to Mayor Koch, short money to several former city councillors as well as chump change to a few more mostly tools on stools still serving on the City Council.

Additionally, Mayor Koch has at least likely facilitated hundreds of city job hires over his past fifteen years in office.

In turn, not only are the jobholders so beholden to their liege lord, it is only reasonable to assume many of these hires should give rise to even more automatic votes by these hires’ extended family members; In particular, grateful in-laws who so saw their idiot sons-in-law finally get a steady job as well as parents who were so able to see their adult sons finally be able to afford to move out of their basements.

Further yet, while Mayor Koch stuck it to local school teachers via the penurious new teachers union contract, Koch has long done seriously beneficial solids for the local firefighters, including with their union contracts that also further provide benefit for hosers statewide by torquing contract comparables given generous contracts provided to Quincy hosers,

As the statewide firefighters’ union is seriously active in politics, Koch has clearly made a call as to which union will pony up both the most financial support as well as be able to provide a considerable number of  well-experienced campaign workers.

Needless to say, time will tell if yet again Koch’s Medusa touch when it comes to making decisions yet again hits the fan come November.

In the meanwhile, however, locals should be prepared to be carpet-bombed with Koch reelections campaign mailers.foisting all manner of puffery, false narratives, and likely also outright nonsense in the coming months..
