“The MBTA is on fire and it’s not just on the Orange Line.”

Overtime pay at the MBTA has soared to levels not noticed by Quincy Quarry News since Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch’s late brother dined at the public trough as well as before former Quincy Police Lieutenant Tom Corliss was indicted for double and sometimes even triple dipping.

How high has MBTA overtime soared?

Its $60 million in overtime expense tabulated to date for the just finished fiscal year is two-thirds more than at the Massachusetts Department of Correction as well as slightly even greater yet than by the State Police.

For some sense of the overtime pay paid out by the T, the number of MBTA workers earning more than $100,000 in overtime pay was thirty-eight whereas the many times larger Greater New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority had only two employers scoring six figures worth of OT in Fiscal Year 2021 and which was during a hiring freeze.

In turn, one could only reasonably wonder if so much overtime might be a factor in the myriad of safety problems that have afflicted the MBTA in recent months.

At least until one might do a deep dive into the work rules for overtime for many of the T’s rank and file.

That and observing typical practices while on the clock.
