In a unprecedented move even per the sorry history of the MBTA, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak announced this morning that Orange Line rail service would be suspended for a month so as to allow for more readily endeavoring to address all manner of problems with the Orange Line in the wake off all manner of problems within the MBTA’s operations. and which gave rise to an emergency review by the Federal Transpiration Administration.

The hope is that by shutting down Orange Line rail service for a month, the T will able to endeavor 24/7 without disruption track replacement, train controller maintenance, station deep cleanings, and more.

Further note that this dramatic as well as drastic move was apparently implemented unilaterally by Governor Baker and General Manager Poftak without any apparent consequential involvement by – much less input from – by the MBTA Board of Directors, and which includes Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch as its senior member, other than the board’s roughly contemporaneous approval of the retaining of a private bus company to provide a no-fare bus service alternative for Orange Line straphangers to suffer during the renovation efforts.
