John Hancock statue pedestal undergoing repairs
– News about Quincy Massachusetts from Quincy Quarry News
While the two nearby water features have been repaired or whatever was needed to return them into service just in time for this week’s heat wave, the granite step up to a lifelessly leaden statue of John Hancock is now undergoing repairs.
While not yet four years old, this granite step is already taking a beating from thrasher skateboarders as well as others.
As such, the granite is suffering from missing pieces of granite that are now being patched.
So much, it would appear, for the often bicycle-riding police presence along Kim Jung Koch Plaza.
So what also for high tech security spy cam feeds to large flat screen monitors at the Quincy Police Department headquarters.
Then again, as the granite used at this koched-up Edifice Complex is not known for its durability as is the legendary alkali feldspar Quincy Granite, such was only to be expected,
Additionally, the overall design is one that only encourages skateboarders to lipslide along the edges of the step as well as elsewhere along Kim Jong Koch Plaza.
Fore example, how the steps are cut to less than ninety degree acute angle sharp and thus vulnerable edges as opposed to more robust as well as best practices rounded bullnose edges.
Then again, when the mayor is big on show rather then actual go, such shortcomings are only to be expected.

Why blame skateboarders for the city’s shoddy concrete work?
Polly,
A few points.
One, the repairs are being down to granite, not to concrete..
Next, the edge of step undergoing repairs as well as stone elsewhere show clear signs of skateboard lipsliding.
And finally, the building of Kim Jong Koch Plaza was contracted out to outside vendors. Even Quincy’s peerless mayor knows better than to have such work done inhouse.
It’s almost a certainty that a good portion of the wear and tear can be attributed to obsessive over-maintenance
