Quincy Center apartment fire stopped before it became a towering inferno
– News about Quincy Massachusetts from Quincy Quarry NewsA disaster was averted today in Quincy Center.
A Quincy Center apartment fire was stopped before it became a towering inferno late this afternoon.
In fact, at least two disasters, if not potentially three, were avoided today.
The Quincy Fire Department responded to a three alarm fire in a senior apartment building opposite Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church on School Street, just up the street from Firestone Tire.
Fortunately, the hosers from the City of Quincy main fire station were literally just around the corner and the fire was thus quicking contained.
Also, fortunate,, Quincy Quarry’s media brethren at Boston 25 had its helicopter overhead, along with another newscopter from another station that Quincy Quarry could not identify from the ground, hovering aloft and so gathering video just in time for their respective 5 o’clock broadcasts.
Obviously, at least two local news stations were desperate for a fire story of the day.
Further fortunate, both helicopters circled overhead in an orderly fashion and so avoided colliding.
Not so fortunate, the fire broke out shortly after 4 PM and lingering disruption was making a mess of the evening commute.
On a bright closing note, while the Quarry was not able to access someone from the Quincy Fire Department for comment, it would appear that the fire was more of a smoky smoke damage event than a grave fire.
Needless to, Quincy Quarry will continue to monitor the situation and report back as might be appropriate.

The Quincy Sun has reported that the fire was in a dumpster. Do they keep dumpsters indoors on the fourth or fifth floor in this building? The photo suggest that maybe they do. Keep in mind, of course, that it is Quincy.

Fred,
Thanks for the FYI! I checked with the Quarry reporter on the scene and it was her view that the fire was likely on the ground floor given the smoke and perhaps also flame marks on the outside of the building. At the same time, she wondered WTQ would a dumpster be placed right next to the building as well as unsecured.
That ladder going up is likely the only erection many of our hosers have seen since their last three-alarm fire or Grinder log-in. Keep it up!
