Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch triples down on the tenting of Quincy Center’s Kim Jong Koch Plaza.
In a move that clearly blows past all reason, workers are working feverishly to erect large to huge party tents near City Hall to host a pops concert a week from Saturday as well as a rumored event tonight which as near as Quincy Quarry can tell will be a private event held on public property.
First, an 11,200 square foot temporary metal frame pavilion which is roughly eight times larger than the typical Quincy home was erected on the lawn next to City Hall. In turn, such is surely going to result in yet another sodding of local taxpayers to pay for the at least re-re-resodding of the now covered over turf after this massive erection goes flat.
Then a smaller canvas and pole tent was thrown up next to the pavilion and which one can only reasonably assume will be used as a food and beverage staging area.
And now, a roughly 6,000 square foot temporary metal frame pavilion has been erected in Kim Jong Koch Plaza between old City Hall and the Church of the Presidents.
As for the cost of it all, Quincy Quarry has ample reason given an inquiry of the temporary tent vendor’s personnel that the rental costs will likely run north – if not well north – of $100,000 for the three tents plus who only knows what more in the way of food, beverage, and other expenses.
In turn, such baits the question as to how is the rental and other event costs going to be paid for as the City of Quincy’s Fiscal Year 2022 budget does not appear to include anywhere near sufficient funding to cover the nut.
At the same time, an online announcement on the City of Quincy’s website notes the Quincy Foundation as an events sponsor.
The mysterious Quincy Foundation is registered as a 503c3 not-for-profit and thus its funding sources are so veiled from ready public scrutiny.

Even so, it would be safe to suspect that the usual suspects have all but assuredly showered down with “donations” to the Quincy Foundation so as to curry favor with Mayor Koch while at the same time avoid the limit on the amount one can donate to his campaign fund.
Conversely, one can also only assume that use of the massive tent capacity will not be made available for use as shelter, however temporarily, for the homeless.
Quincy is not the city it should be.
The largest city in New England – six states – without a hospital.
The mayor and his sycophantic city council spend money on unimportant items and neglect quality of life.
Quincy Center, especially downtown Quincy, was in an uproar for days — weeks — preparing for a party to which the general public was not invited. And what was the cost to the taxpayers of the city for this party — to which the general public was not invited? One might reasonably suspect that other city functions might be negatively affected due to lack of funds — funds that were pissed away on a soiree to which the general public was not invited.
Wouldn’t bet against it.
