Clover patches and dog “spots” in Quincy’s Kim Jong Koch Plaza’s lawn.
Obsessive to points well past compulsive cleaning efforts by Kim Jong Koch’s Snow Team Six notwithstanding, Snow Team Six does not know what to do with lawn.
To this point, Quincy Quarry brought in turf expert nonpareil Arnold NIcklaus to offer up comment.
For starters, Nicklaus noted someone overrode common sense practice by installing lush golf course sod at Kim Jong Koch Plaza instead of an appropriate high traffic and salt-tolerant turf blend.
Luxurious golf course turf is a high maintenance proposition. Golf course superintendent must maintain a rigorous as well as an exacting regimen of fertilization, pest management, and weed mitigation on top of fixing divots and ball marks to score fairways ideal for a PGA tournament-grade broadcast display. Fail to do so and one will find oneself out of bounds.
Park grass turf, on the other hand, is a whole different proposition in terms of its use, seed varieties, environmental factors, and thus care needs.
For example, watering and fertilizing can be tricky. Lawns prefer fewer but deeper waterings as opposed to daily waterings; conversely, too much water can essentially drown a lawn and so open the way for weeds.
And as for fertilizing, while grass thrives if well-fertilized, the City of Quincy must tread lightly as it has already been hit with a $100 million fix-it ticket issued by the Environmental Protection Agency for spilling sewerage in the harbor.
Additionally, Snow Team Six has already totally screwed the pooch on dealing with nitrogenous liquid waste left behind by female dogs on the lawn.
As is their genders’ nature, female dogs tend to seek out private settings to void their bladders whereas male dogs tend to mark their territory with a little here, a little there, as well as almost everywhere.
As a dog has to do what a dog has to do, the best way to deal with nature calling upon a female dog is to simply hose down her wet spot left on a lawn as soon as possible so as to dilute her nitrogenous wastes.
While the wet spots are high in nitrogen and lawns benefit from nitrogen, the trick is to lessen the impact of unloading a full bladder in one spot by dousing it with water..
Plus, #1 is easier to discretely recycle rather than is #2.
