New Orange and Red Line trains delayed.

As should come as no great surprise to long suffering MBTA straphangers, the $2 billion plan to replace aged MBTA subway cars that date as far back as the Nixon Administrations is running behind schedule.

The full replacement of the current Orange Line cars is (currently, ed.) running 15 months behind schedule with full replacement (currently, ed.) projected by April 2023 and the full replacement of Red Line’s decrepit cars (currently, ed.) running a year behind schedule with full replacement (currently, ed.) projected by September 2024.

Also running late is the upgrading of train control equipment that is supported to increase passenger capacity by reducing the theoretical shortest time between trains by 25% on the Orange Line and by 33% on the Red Line until (at least, ed.) the summer of 2023 and winter of 2024, respectfully.
