Black Lives Matters Quincy to chalk up another successful peaceful protest?

The same key parties who gave rise to the very well-attended George Floyd twilight vigil and peaceful march on June 2 that was then followed by a second sunny afternoon Sunday prayer vigil at Wollaston Beach on June 14 are planning a third event on the eve of Independence Day Friday July 3 from 5 PM until 8 PM, weather permitting and a rain day to be announced if need be.

Chalk it up!

The event is called Quincy Chalk For Justice and will entail words and art created with chalk on hard surfaces in front of City Hall.

Think peaceful picketing meets artistic teachable moment as the event is open to all ages with children especially welcome as this is planned to be a family-friendly event.

Additionally, as well as all but needless to say, please be sure to wear masks and use hand sanitizer when sharing chalk.

Event organizers are also encouraging Quincy locals to draw and write messages on their neighborhood sidewalks and streets as well as make signs for display in their windows or on their lawns to help promote awareness of racial inequity and systemic injustices in the days leading up to this event.

Mayor annoyed?
An old Facebook image

While probably but a coincidence, Quincy Quarry cannot help but imagine that Quincy’s peerless mayor will not look with favor upon the chalking up of his beloved but outrageously expensive Kim Jung Koch Plaza.

Quarry also suspects that he may again fail to appreciate that words not only matter but also that using the wrong ones both hurt as well as perpetuate problems.

Regardless, Quincy Quarry will be observing the event.

That and monitoring things afterwards to see how long it will take before the Koch Machine rolls out cleaning crews to clean up the chalk.

Additionally, the Quincy Quarry News team is running an informal pool within its newsroom as to when the chalk messages are hosed.

Needless to say, picking the winning time will be tricky what with the long holiday weekend as the clean up will either be delayed until next week or entail paying out holiday weekend premium overtime pay to unleash the usual obsessive at least every weekday cleaning of Kim Jung Koch Plaza.

Budget concerns given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic notwithstanding, the early times are already taken in the newsroom pool.
