While Fathers’ Day had been celebrated for at least sixty years when Nixon made it official, celebrating mothers on a scheduled basis conversely goes back to at least Roman times, subsequently by various national church members of the Anglican Communion on Mothering Sunday, and officially as a secular holiday in the United States in 1914 via a formal proclamation by then President Woodrow Wilson.
