New York City’s emergency responders have been struck by the coronavirus leading to thousands of police, fire and paramedics having to call out sick, adding extra pressure on city services.

Law and order fears for New York as ten thousand police and firefighters out sick.

New York City, the production site for decades of all manner of Law and Order TV series is teetering on the edge of collapsed of it it uniformed first reponders.

Roughly sixth of New York City’s police have called out sick in recent days and roughly a quarter of its fire department personnel are out sick.

The percentage of personnel out sick at the fire department are particularly disruptive as the Fire Department of New York is the primary provider of ambulance services in New York City.

Even so, there is some positive news. 

The incidence of rape, robbery and assault crimes have dropped significantly compared to the days before the lockdown was implemented and thus fewer people are out and about.

Unfortunately, at the same time “… (t)he NYPD is reporting a 75 percent increase in burglaries of commercial premises compared with the same time last year.”

“The increase has coincided with the dates when the city ordered bars and restaurants to close and for other nonessential businesses to shut up shop.”
