United States Attorney sues City of Quincy over alleging dumping raw sewage into the harbor.

The United States Attorney for Massachusetts has filed a lawsuit against the City of Quincy, accusing the city of dumping sewage and untreated wastewater into Boston Harbor, Dorchester Bay, Quincy Bay, and other bodies of water through the city’s sewer and drainage system.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, water quality samples from 2009 through 2018 showed E. coli, Enterococcus, and other pollutants at Quincy beaches and other tidal areas.

The lawsuit also alleges the water quality samples concurrently taken from Quincy Bay, Sagamore Creek, Town Brook, Town River Bay and Furnace Brook tested positive for ammonia, pharmaceutical compounds, and surfactants, all of which are pollutants found in untreated sewerage waste.

The Clean Water Act authorizes daily penalties of $37,500 for each violation that occurred on or before November 2, 2015, and $54,833 for each violation occurring thereafter.

The United States Attorney’s complaint requests that fines be imposed as well as that the court also order Quincy to refrain from committing future violations of the Clean Water Act.

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch’s office was not immediately available for comment.

Fortunately, Mayor Thomas P. Koch’s designated spokesmodel Pinocchio Walkbacker caught a lucky break: the sewerage hit the fan on the usually ideal day for breaking badly news© to hit the fan and so most likely go quietly into the abyss of the weekend news cycle.
