State Police Troop E eliminated and GPS tracking technology activated in State Police Cruisers.

Governor Charlie Baker and Massachusetts State Police Colonel Kerry Gilpin have announced a 30-day update to their ongoing action plan to effect clearly needed state police reforms.

Opening action steps include disbanding Troop E, distributing MassPike policing coverage among the other troops, activating GPS tracking equipment already installed on cruisers and rebranding Troop E’s barracks to its new Troop H name.

Additionally, essentially all personnel at most state police barracks will be made available to work the Pike and so help better allocate available resources while also so striving to mitigate overtime staffing needs.

“F Troop” in action

Similarly, the both understaffed but still under worked rubber gun brigade F Troop stationed at Logan Airport is going to be reinforced as soon as possible so as to reduce its excessive overtime pay expenses while patrolling MassPort’s three airports as well as the Boston Seaport District.

Additionally, the wearing of body cameras as well as a variety of other steps are expected to be implemented as soon as possible.

Whether but most likely not, Port Authority officials will cooperate with police, however, remains to be seen.

Further stymieing Troop F from endeavoring to better cooperate with local police to serve and protect, the state legislature recently blocked Boston Mayor Marty Walsh’s proposed legislation to allow the Boston Police Department to more actively patrol the Boston’s commercial waterfront and so better support actual patrol policing work by F Troop as well as better serve and protect the general public as police are sworn to do.

Always follow the money!!!

Concurrently, early reports indicating just how bad has been the overtime paid for work not done at Troop E have also been released.

For but one example, one Troop E trooper appears to have been paid for 117 overtime shifts not worked during 2017.

This trooper has already put in his papers for retirement, but so far the state retirement board has all retirement requests by suspected state police overtime abusers in pending status.
