Biotech looking to expand but not to Quincy?
The Boston Business Journal has all but confirmed that Quincy is not on the radar of biotech firms looking to set up shop or expand their existing operations in the Metro Boston area.
Quincy Quarry has further long heard rumblings of even less favorable impressions of Quincy among biotech companies as well as in arguable spite of the City of Quincy and the local chamber of commerce long touting Quincy to biotech firms.
The key problem appears to be the classic real estate axiom: location, location, location.
Significant problems for Quincy is its considerable distance from major area research universities, private sector research complexes or major teaching hospitals.
Transportation is also a serious impediment.
Quincy is variously problematic in terms of road access and capacity as well as that the MBTA is, well, the MBTA.
For example, the run of the I-93 Central Artery from the Braintree Split to East Milton Square has been noted as one of worst traffic messes in the country.
At best, Quincy looks to be at best but an affordable option for housing for those willing to suffer the T or suffering driving to work somewhere else where biotech companies prefer to set up shop.
For example, even Somerville’s Assembly Row district looks to be more attractive than Quincy given its much closer proximity to major research universities, current private sector research facilities and teaching hospitals.
Then again, Somerville does have a new state of the art movie theater complex, the Davis Square Theater, a lively arts and entertainment seen, all sorts of often better quality retail shopping options, close proximity to all sorts of other amenities, top-ranked and still improving local public schools and even a local primary care hospital that is also a teaching hospital.
After all, it would seem hard to imagine a major biotech company setting up shop in a city which does not have a hospital and which is unfortunately the case in Quincy .
