Quincy Councillor inexplicably fails to speak up on Squantum redevelopment proposal.
In the latest case of a local ward councillor failing to speak up, Ward 6 Ward Councillor Brian Manatee was caught on video not exactly speaking up at a neighborhood meeting on a developer’s plans to redevelop the site of the former Star of the Sea Church on Squantum Island.
In fact, the silence was deafening.
Needless to say, Manatee fans – and perhaps even his foes – were probably gobsmacked over the usual long and loudly speaking ward councillor’s quietude in this video.
On the other hand, if one can read American Sign Language, perhaps they discern was said during the following video.
Quincy Quarry has all manner of technical resources, but its audio enhancement software has a bug and the Quarry’s sign language reader is in the bag.
Regardless of the lack of clear audio, any and all knowledgeable about ongoing overdevelopment plans in the Q will see in the video that the developer has retained the usual suspects in support of proposal; specifically, the usual deal facilitator from the local firm of Phlegmming and Phlegmming.
As such, Squantum residents are thus facing Hobbesian choices: begrudgingly accept the proposed conversion of the existing buildings into multi unit housing and so maintain the current buildings’ envelopes; face demolition of the former church buildings and then suffer their replacement with (at least, ed.) four likely to be massive as well as outsized for the neighborhood McMansions; or, suffer an unstoppable as well as unmodifiable 40b proposal of a yet to be disclosed site redevelopment plan.
At minimum, expect Quincy Quarry to at least continue to monitor the Councillor’s occasional weekend stops at Stully’s in Quincy Center to hoist one or three or so.
