Here we go again …

Government giveaways to industries will benefit all of Massachusetts, so the story goes.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence to suggest that this story is true.

Even so, the normally documented performance metrics wonk that is Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker is doubling down his predessor’s failed biotech industry development plan.

A little history: in 2008, then-Governor Deval Patrick argued that by giving away $1 billion to build the biotech industry, the Commonwealth would spur the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs, only to see precious little come of it other than some new science facilities at University of Massachusetts campuses.

In fact, Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch also concurrently spent a couple hundred thousand dollars trying to encourage biotech companies to set up shop in Quincy, only to end up with bupkis to show for it.

Apparently, no one explained to Mayor Koch that the reason Cambridge has such a considerable presence of biotech companies is that it is also home to both MIT and Harvard University.
