WBZ Channel 4 News Q’s up on a Walmart © parking lot story.
While watching the TV in the Quincy Quarry newsroom this past Saturday morning while hoping that the coffee might finally kick in, WBZ Channel 4 News reported a story about a car photographed parked in a shopping cart corral at a New England Walmart © because its driver apparently could not find a parking space as per WBZ.
As to be expected, the WBZ newsreaders did the usual prattle about having thought about doing similarly themselves, only to then note that so parking in a parking lot where parking is not allowed is parking ticket worthy.
While Quincy Quarry tends to be respectful of its media brethren, several grave problems were instantly identified in the QQ newsroom even if most everyone was still hungover as well as that all were as yet uncaffeinated.

A People of WalMart photo from viralnova.com

One is that everyone in the QQ newsroom is a People of Walmart fan and thus immediately suspected a faux photo – or at least a suspect story.
The other is that parking tickets typically cannot be legally inflicted upon someone parking on private property.  Towed, no problem if duly posted – but not cited with a municipal parking ticket.
As regards the first problem, the QQ newsroom quickly found that the purportedly recent photo has been posted on at least Pinterest, Pikdik as well as a general website for upwards of as long as 18 months.
In short, file this story under fluffing up airtime during the slow and real news scarce Dog Days of Summer.
The lessons of the day:
One, the once vaulted WBZ newsroom ain’t what it used to be.
And for another, one should never trust everything on the internet even it is commonly believed that everything on the internet is true.
Finally, just because a story seems plausible does NOT mean that it really happened – at least not as presented.
As such, expect a Quincy Quarry combined exposé on faux stories on the internet as well as a primer on how to spot such phony stories.
