— News and commentary about elsewhere covered by Quincy Quarry News
Snow removal costs in Quincy continue to metastasize.
Per a review of the latest data available online, spending year to date is currently running 120% over than budget.
The amounts in dollars: as of yesterday — a Friday the 13th, $4,538,496.86 has been spent or is otherwise obligated to be paid and thus snow and ice removal spending is at this point $2,678,324.68 overbudget.
With impending bills likely inbound, more snowfall possible, and/or clearing of existing snow piles, will spending hit $3 million over budget and then perhaps go on to total up to over $5 million spent?
On a bright note, snow removal workers are raking in surely healthy pops to their take home wages and which might take some of the sting out of their loses betting on the Patriots in the Super Bowl last week unless expected pay fueled their betting on the come.
That and hoping that their significant others do not ask any questions.
Needless to day, Quincy Quarry News’ ever-growing legions of loyal readers can count on the Quarry to monitor the City of Quincy’s books and report updates as might be appropriate.
In the meanwhile, do note that the local snowfall total to date is only around 75% or thereabouts of the historical average whereas spending on snow removal at this point is running well over twice what was budgeted by the Koch Maladministration.
In short, no matter how one ponders the data, the Koch Machine has koched-up dealing with this year’s so far below average total winter snowfall.

Listen, we have NOT had much snow in 4 years and we were due for serious snow but the budget was small and we were hit by two 24” storms. I had 34” in my Yard so we’re looking at almost 5 FEET of snow in total for the winter nd this is a BIG COST. But we need to spend more and NOT plow but a single lane on two lane hilly roads like Mears Ave. Driving up or down Mears was horrible for its residents.
Having a but ONE LANE road on a Giant Hill is crazy. Roads like Mears Ave should have had TWO or THREE passes to make it and others passable and worry about the cost later. It is NOT time to SAVE a few bucks when a blizzard hits. That is not what we as taxpayers want. That’s not why we live in Quincy. Keep plowing so we have roads to drive on.
Mr, Aikens,
Are you aware of the fact that the City has a snow emergency one way street use master plan? To this verity, such surely could have been spot applied to the Great Hill neighborhood in the wake of the recent big snowstorms.
