Determined locals did what many considered impossible: outraged over the pending 89% raise for Quincy’s mayor come 2028 that would rank the mayor of the small city that is Quincy among a handful of highest paid mayors in the county per current pay rates as well as roughly 45% raises for city councillors come the start of 2026, a cadre of locals hit the bricks to door knock and work local high foot traffic locations to gather over the signatures needed to see a ballot question on November’s ballot calling for a revisiting of the pending fat raises for local elected fat cats and so reset the raises to something more in line with what local working stiffs who pay the fatties’ salaries might see in the way of raises.
Roughly 5,500 certified signatures are needed to see the ballot question tied to the petition on the November ballot.
At this point, the petition gathers are already to be looking to win no matter what.
For starters, if the City Clerk for Quincy certifies less than the needed number of signatures for the ballot question to go on the ballot in November, many locals will surely be livid and so likely vote against Koch Machine candidates running for city council and school committee seats.
And even more motivating of already outraged locals would be if Mayor Koch’s consigliere rules as he has already threatened to do that the petition is flawed and so does not approve the proposed ballot question for inclusion on November’s ballot.
Alternatively, perhaps the ballot question has scored enough signatures and is — however unlikely — allowed onto ballot and so encourages disgruntled voters to get out and vote with Koch Machine candidates so suffering the wraith of a higher voter turnout than would otherwise be a sleepy and thus incumbent-friendly off-year election.
In any event, Quincy Quarry News readers can count on the Quarry to follow this story of grassroots pushback against the self-dealing of La Kocha Nostra.
Also note that the State Ethics Commission has yet to report out its findings on the undeniable problems with how the mayoral and city councillor raises were grifted.
Further of ongoing related interest, Mayor Koch has in recent months tapped his campaign fund to pay close to $20,000 for legal services provided by a boutique Boston-based law firm with Quincy roots that is well-known among those in the know as the go to firm for politicians facing legal ethical problems.

The administration was on full damage control after the mayor’s interview on WBZ Radio. At the same time, they were not too occupied as they could take some time to ensure the Pay raise ballot initiative would not make the ballot. Somehow the clerks office staff (majority are Koch appointees or hack hires) were able to disqualify over two thousand of the seven thousand signatures.
The Radio interview and the responses that followed and now the questionable ruling on the pay raise ballot initiative has many voters now looking to oust the incumbents on the council and school committee as a protest to the mayor and the suspected unscrupulous goings on in City Hall.
