Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch’s long ongoing as well as known penchant for going off topic during not carefully scripted and tightly controlled situations arguably set a new high water mark this week.

Simply put, Mayor Koch stepped into it — if not faceplanted himself in it — during a surely sought as well as expected to be a cupcake of a media op on a local talk radio station Monday evening so as to talk up his variously problematic plans to install Roman Catholic patron saints on the impending new City of Quincy public safety building.

“Could you repeat the question Alex?”

How did the Mayor end up deep in his own bovine byproduct?

By going completely off topic during a nighttime radio talk show interview on a major Boston area radio station that was supposed to focus on talking up his formally challenged plans to install patron saints from his Roman Catholic faith by his posing that the Media had overly picked on the Catholic Church as regards the horrific Boston Roman Catholic Archdioceses sexual abuse scandal as well as other Roman Catholic communities .

Adding insult to injury, Mayor Koch asserted that the abuse was strictly a matter of homosexuality run amok and so came across as arguably intimating that such was solely to blame.

Youae wanna a piece of me?

So what, apparently, for the fact that it was shown that the archdiocese as a matter of course had long felled to address the sexual abuse of youth by predatory priests as well as moved around known abusers instead of turning them over to law enforcement for proper resolution.

Granted, Mayor Koch is entitled to his personal views, however, as a public figure as well as that as mayor he is also the Chair of the School Committee, his personal views are profoundly troubling, if not arguably should in and of themselves be disqualifying of position as mayor.

Criticisms of him thus came fast, furious, and heavy.

For but a few examples from just a Reddit thread follow:from roughly140 often irate and outraged comments posted on one thread as off early afternoon on Wednesday.

  • “He absolutely needs to resign for this (but he’s not going to),”
  • “Blaming gay men for the absolute crisis of pedophilia committed by priests in the Catholic Church is reprehensible.”
  • “Dismissing this as ‘homosexual issues’ suggests that these were not predators engaging in illegal behavior (they were), and implies that there was consent involved in scenarios with underage victims of sexual assault (there was not, by definition),”
  • “This is horrific to hear from a public official.”

Further, the teachers union local formally demanded a well-reasoned and thus a sound request for an apology as well a even more also well-warranted requests of Mayor Koch.

Bare chested, buff, and look-a-likes

About all Quincy Quarry can add without retching on keyboards is how the mayor blithely tap-danced around problems with consent and posed other instances of intentionally-based sexual abuse so as to appear to be trying to disingenuously downplay the arguable institutionally-enabled abuse by the Roman Catholic Church.

That and how Quincy Quarry News looks to continue to be the only local media to have pointed out how the patron saint statues feature bare-chested, buff, and all but identical homoerotic fashioning of the patron saints save for the wings on one of the statutes.

Then again, denial in such situations can run deep.
