Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch’s long ongoing as well as known penchant for going off topic during not carefully scripted and tightly controlled situations arguably set a new high water mark this week.
Simply put, Mayor Koch stepped into it — if not faceplanted himself in it — during a surely sought as well as expected to be a cupcake of a media op on a local talk radio station Monday evening so as to talk up his variously problematic plans to install Roman Catholic patron saints on the impending new City of Quincy public safety building.
How did the Mayor end up deep in his own bovine byproduct?
By going completely off topic during a nighttime radio talk show interview on a major Boston area radio station that was supposed to focus on talking up his formally challenged plans to install patron saints from his Roman Catholic faith by his posing that the Media had overly picked on the Catholic Church as regards the horrific Boston Roman Catholic Archdioceses sexual abuse scandal as well as other Roman Catholic communities .
Adding insult to injury, Mayor Koch asserted that the abuse was strictly a matter of homosexuality run amok and so came across as arguably intimating that such was solely to blame.
So what, apparently, for the fact that it was shown that the archdiocese as a matter of course had long felled to address the sexual abuse of youth by predatory priests as well as moved around known abusers instead of turning them over to law enforcement for proper resolution.
Granted, Mayor Koch is entitled to his personal views, however, as a public figure as well as that as mayor he is also the Chair of the School Committee, his personal views are profoundly troubling, if not arguably should in and of themselves be disqualifying of position as mayor.
Criticisms of him thus came fast, furious, and heavy.
For but a few examples from just a Reddit thread follow:from roughly140 often irate and outraged comments posted on one thread as off early afternoon on Wednesday.
- “He absolutely needs to resign for this (but he’s not going to),”
- “Blaming gay men for the absolute crisis of pedophilia committed by priests in the Catholic Church is reprehensible.”
- “Dismissing this as ‘homosexual issues’ suggests that these were not predators engaging in illegal behavior (they were), and implies that there was consent involved in scenarios with underage victims of sexual assault (there was not, by definition),”
- “This is horrific to hear from a public official.”
Further, the teachers union local formally demanded a well-reasoned and thus a sound request for an apology as well a even more also well-warranted requests of Mayor Koch.
About all Quincy Quarry can add without retching on keyboards is how the mayor blithely tap-danced around problems with consent and posed other instances of intentionally-based sexual abuse so as to appear to be trying to disingenuously downplay the arguable institutionally-enabled abuse by the Roman Catholic Church.
That and how Quincy Quarry News looks to continue to be the only local media to have pointed out how the patron saint statues feature bare-chested, buff, and all but identical homoerotic fashioning of the patron saints save for the wings on one of the statutes.
Then again, denial in such situations can run deep.

An absolute disgrace! Does he not understand the concept of statutory rape? Has his misguided opinion influenced the standards of the Quincy Police Department?
It is time (as in prior to the November 4th election) for all members of the city council and school committee to publicly state their opinions on what was said during the WBZ 1030 interview of Thomas Koch, Mayor of Quincy, MA.
Mayor Koch needs to and should resign!!!
He is used to being “interviewed” by his own media person @ City Hall in cupcake fashion. Remember Tom was driving around a dump truck before Sheets helped him out. I hope the gay community rises up even more. Boston Herald Editorial Board called for his resignation this morning! Koch named a field for Dr. Fingerprints Creedon. The Koch Machine is finally facing some scrutiny for spending. He must hate Quincy Quarry & Blandino @ the Ledger! I heard all the City deferred compensation plans are being moved from one company to a Koch Kiss Ass who runs a shrine for him on Facebook. Quincy Quarry should check it out. $ullivan is taking over all the City deferred retirement accounts. Time for a State Audit! If you donate enough to Tom & kiss his ass you can get a favor. Otherwise you need to be related by blood or marriage! Look @ the Department Heads… shameful they have to write checks or they don’t get promotions. He has the police & fire Departments kissing his fat rump as he hands them everything & they post Harlequin Romance novel shit about him on-line and stroke his ego. Time to get a new charter in the City with a strong City Council & a ceremonial mayor. If we are going to pay for a mayor, let’s hire a city manager who is educated. Koch would be spreading grass seed if Sheets didn’t give him a job. CEO my ass!
“Touchy” Creedon, (his penchant for “special” young female QPS students) — Broomed.
The Mayor’s buddy, Siciliano, a pedophile grooming his charges at taxpayer expense — Broomed.
Oh, and a golden oldie: a now former QPD detective by the name of Keenan, “allegedly” sexually assaulting special needs residents @ CC school in Hanover and who is the son of a former QPD chief and nephew of Uncle Mr Mayor — Broomed!
There’s many more credible stories regarding the “mean streets “ of Quincy, particularly for the last 10+ years and remember Tommy was Jim Sheets b*tt boy.
He was/is a parishioner at Sacred Heart. ‘nuf said.
Revolting! Koch should step down immediately. His actions and his words indicate that he is more concerned with foisting his religious beliefs on everyone else than he is in upholding the constitutional requirement for separation of church and state. His views on the church sex abuse scandal indicate a lack of understanding of the obvious issues involved. His tenuous (at best) grasp of objective reality should disqualify him from holding public office.
Tom’s Mom took lot of Tylenol.
Hey, Tommy, take a tip from your old pal Fredzo — resign today.
