As should not really come as any great surprise when the City of Everett is the subject of discussion, its mayor has been found to have apparently unduly juiced his pay by $180,000 by the Massachusetts Inspector General.
Even so, regional media engaged in a media feeding frenzy.
WGBH, The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, Boston 25, MassLive, NBC Boston, WCVB, WHDH, and various other lesser media piled on with extended coverage.
In turn, Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch has to be wondering what might end up happening to him as he is currently under review by at least the State Ethics Commission for endeavoring to score himself a $135,000 raise this year in clear violation of Massachusetts General Law.
That and arguably Quincy’s City Charter as well as thus perhaps also for a decade’s worth of $23,000 raises, not to mention fines for up to $10,000 or as much as five years in prison for each of his five apparent counts of not abiding by the rules.
Carlo DeMaria got caught with his hand in the cookie jar again? Shocking. The guy was raking in extra pay like a mob boss collecting ‘favors,’ and now he’s finally getting slapped on the wrist—because, let’s be real, politicians like him never get more than that. But hey, Everett’s loss could be Quincy’s warning shot.
Mayor Tom Koch has been running Quincy like it’s his own personal fiefdom for how many terms now? Twelve? Thirteen? (Feels like a hundred.) And let’s not forget his very creative approach to city finances—whether it’s mysteriously ballooning budgets, sweetheart deals for developers, or keeping control of every city board like an emperor clutching his crown.
So is Koch next in line for a ‘grifting excess pay’ scandal? Maybe, maybe not. But if history tells us anything, it’s that these local lifers don’t know when to quit—and they certainly don’t know how to resist a little extra padding in their paychecks. Quincy taxpayers, better keep an eye on City Hall, because if there’s one thing our mayor definitely knows how to do, it’s taking care of himself first.
