Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch, center. A Fat Boy BBQ image
— Quincy Massachusetts News by Quincy Quarry News – News, Opinion and Commentary
In the Quincy Quarry News newsroom as well as by others they all found to be most amusing, Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch was front and center cutting the ribbon for the grand opening of Fat Boy BBQ near the intersection of Beale and Hancock streets in Wollaston Center.
A little know fact to locals but all too well known to local small business owners, to see Mayor Koch opt to attend such a grand opening of a new local business typically entails joining the Quincy Chamber of Commerce at the appropriate Koch Klub membership level.
Then again such should come as no great surprise as on other matters such real estate development, variations on pay for play are common in the Q.
seems more than aporopriate. only thing missing is group photo on front of business
mayor and his crony council
Fat boy at Fat Boy.
I wonder how much BBQ fat boy had.
Mayor Koch cuts the ribbon … and maybe the line for ribs. Koch is at it again. This time, he’s not breaking ground on luxury condos or renaming something after himself. No, today he’s grand-opening Fat Boy BBQ. Because, clearly, this city’s most pressing need isn’t affordable housing or functioning public transit. Rather, it’s brisket.
I’m sure the photo op was stellar: Koch wielding an oversized pair of scissors and grinning like he personally smoked the pulled pork. Did he stick around to shake hands and chat with everyday residents? Or was this more of a “show up, cut the ribbon, grab a plate, and bounce” kind of deal?
Don’t get me wrong, I love good BBQ as much as the next person, but what’s the play here? Another notch in the mayor’s “man of the people” shtick? Maybe it’s his way of saying, “Forget the traffic, here’s some cornbread!” Or perhaps he’s hoping the sweet aroma of BBQ sauce will distract us from, oh, I don’t know, the escalating property taxes and the ever-present rumors of local corruption.
Fat Boy BBQ better be ready for the influx of Koch’s cronies, because if there’s one thing this mayor knows how to do, it’s show up where the gravy (or BBQ sauce) is. Enjoy your ribs, folks. Meanwhile, the rest of us will chew on why this feels more like a campaign stunt than civic progress.
