Last night Boston City Council voted in favor of Boston Councilor Ed Flynn’s proposal ordinance to appoint someone as Rat Czar for the City of Boston as well as put this person in charge of a dedicated new and standablone anti-rodent department.
Boston has long been been high on Orkin Pest Control’s annual listings of the rattiest cities in the country — most recently Boston ranked an unlucky 13th on the list last fall — and thus at least likely many Boston residents are likely at least vicariously thinking about feeding at least some city officials to local rats.
Councilor Flynn first started the ball rolling last April. Given his persistence, not only has he seen his ordnance to name Rat Czar approved, he has also scored the support of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu along the way.
Locally, Quincy has gone a different way.
Given considerable new construction disruption, less than solid trash handling practices by locals, and the like, Quincy has experienced problems with both four-legged and two-legged rats.
However, instead of naming a local Rat Czar and so underscoring Quincy’s rat problem, the City of Quincy has opted to throw additional funding to the City of Quincy’s Public Health Department.
In any event, time will tell how well things work out in Boston as well as in Quincy this spring when rats litter Quincy with new litters of pups.
The only good news, with interest rates still high, the plague of redevelopment and thus demolition and construction in Quincy that also puts rats out on the street is moderating.
