Protecting its stores and customers from reckless drivers with bollards

Apropos of yesterday’s tragic SUV crashing into the Apple Store at the Derby Street Shoppes in HIngham, at least certain news media have reported on how many business owners have installed robust bollards to at least hinder careless or otherwise reckless drivers from crashing into their places of business.

For example, per CBS News, Walmart has long featured robust bollards at its stores and so suffered far less damage and injuries whenever a driver plows her or his ride into one of its stores than comparable big box stores without such barriers.

These barriers are more for fending off reckless drivers of personal rides than truck bombers seeking to target prominent targets such as major government buildings, a large company headquarters or busy soft targets such as prominent museums or theaters.

To this point, the City of Quincy has in recent enough years opted to install bollards here and there at certain public buildings

Unfortunately, these bollards have all but invariably tended to be more decorative or to koch block drivers from driving their rides where the city does not want them to drive than to stop out of control vehicles from from crashing into buildings and/or where people be vulnerable.

Now, however, inn the wake of yesterdays’ tragedy in Hingham, one can only assume that the Koch Maladministration will soon announce a major spending initiative to beef up security against out of control vehicles, albeit probably most likely at venues which already have decorative bollards.

After all, the state legislature recently spent money to protect protesters protesting this and that outside of the State House on Beacon Hill.
