Federal takeover of the MBTA next?
– News covered by Quincy Quarry News with commentary added.
Quincy Quarry News transportation and trafficking desk has been opining for weeks about the possibility that the Federal Transportation Agency might takeover the T and last night the Quarry’s media brethren at a major Boston broadcast news outlet has posed what is becoming increasing likely.
The MBTA has experienced a worsening spate of accidents, including those fatal, as well as all manner of drastic degradations in the so-called service provided to long-suffering straphangers.
All things considered, it is hard to imagine how the feds could do worse; then again, there is the possibility of going from the frying pan into the fire.
In any event, how soon might we know?
The Federal Transportation Administration’s final report on its investigation of the myriad of problems at the T is expected to be released this month and such would be an appropriate time to concurrently announce a federal takeover of the MBTA.
Such a transportation system takeover by the feds is rare but would not unprecedented. Washington DC’s Metrorail transit system was taken over by the feds in 2015 over what the Quarry would rate as a lesser level of dire problems than those which have been chronic at the T in recent months.
In the meanwhile, the MBTA is imposing all manner of service cuts as well as announcing all manner of expedited maintenance projects in the hope that perhaps such might at least slow the feds from taking over the T.
In the meanwhile, still no comment out of Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch and who is also the Chair of the MBTA Advisory Board for a decade as well as is the senior ranking member of the current MBTA Board of Directors.
None whatsoever.
