Jasiel Correia yet again granted a delay in his reporting to prison,
The former mayor of Fall River and now convicted felon has scored his sixth delay on reporting to a six-year stay at New Hampshire Club Fed.
He was slated to report tomorrow, March 4, but his reporting date has been bumped back until April 4.
Correia has first managed to work helping out at his wife’s family business during the holiday season to score a delay in reporting as well as later successfully scored another delay given that his designated Club Fed was suffering a now cratering COVID-19 infection spike.
At this point, Correia has asked the court to stay his sentence until the 1st Circuit of Appeals issues its decision on his appeal.
So far, however, his trial court judge has declined to do so, saying the delays requests will not “effectively be open-ended.”
Additionally, federal prosecutors are opposed to granting Correia’s request for yet another delay after his current April 4 reporting date, noting to the court, “It is time for Defendant Correia to go to prison.”
Prosecutors further noted that “the holiday rush is over at Correia’s family’s restaurant, COVID-19 is under control, and Correia has run out of excuses to avoid prison,” prosecutors wrote. “The people of Fall River have a right to see their corrupt former mayor finally held accountable for his egregious abuse of his position of trust.”
