– News about Quincy Massachusetts from Quincy Quarry News
Roche Brothers running away from the Q.
It has been a while since Quincy Quarry News has run a Flew the Q story as most businesses throwing in the towel in Quincy recently have been small ones.
Now, however, care of one of the Quarry’s many sources high but mostly low comes stones-busting word that Roche Brothers Supermarkets will be closing up shop in Quincy come no later than April 11.
As such, plan on shopping elsewhere for high-quality Easter dinner ham.
That or any other quality food products for that matter.
No word what may fill the space, but Quincy Quarry’s real estate advisor suggests that locals should not be surprised if 99 Ranch Market comes to the Q.
Even worse, arguably the one but merely premium retailer in Quincy is leaving Quincy.
In short, so much for Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch’s long as well as wicked expensive pursuit of a new and upscale Quincy.
So first it was Big Y — where I enjoyed shopping, now it’s Roche Bros where I often shop but have never been quite satisfied. Two supermarkets closing in the course of what — three years (?) — and nothing new coming in to fill the void. NOTHING. I shop at Kam Man and occasionally other Asian markets but for everyday items those are not my primary sources.
So much for the bogus claim that all the ridiculous overbuilding of apartments and apartments and apartments and condos and apartments and more condos and apartments in Quincy will attract upscale retail. We can’t even keep goddamn supermarkets in the city.
Great, on top of everything else, I now have to learn how to cook Asian food for a family of five! Then again, I should save serious money on take-out.
Just imagine: Quincy may soon have more Asian supermarkets than the City of Quincy has Asian employees.
It could be worse.
Lin, just say it, racists run the city! It is no secret.
Now make the mayor a number 54 with extra soy, fish sauce, and fortune cookies. Chop chop!
Congratulations on the new restaurant, and I hope your mother is doing well.
Thanks, Betsy, you say it better than me and always make me laugh. Good night :)
And Lin, if he comments on your legs, ignore him. He is the mayor.
See you soon.
Quincy is such a ghetto for groceries, the two Stop & Shops are awful, smelly and very poorly 0stocked with horrible quality foods.. produce is the worst never mind the fact there’s hardly any organic food and what there is, is not edible, looks like 2 months old. I wish either Market Basket or Trader Joe’s opened anywhere in Quincy.
It is 2022; we need more competition, not less, as the cost of groceries has skyrocketed.
I called my bookie to buy Stop & Shop stock, but he was only taking Super Bowl action.
That’s a sell trade, not buy for me.. worst company and I know directly from people who used to work there, it’s a horrible company to work for. Sell All!
Would it be great if MARKET BASKET would move to Quincy?
Fred,
Yes but so far not.
For starters, the former Roche location is too small for a Market Basket.
Next up, when the MBTA bought the former Lowe’s store opposite the Quincy Adams T station for redevelopment as a busyard, a Quincy Quarry source advised the Quarry that Stop & Rob had taken over the Lowe’s lease so as to koch-block competition from coming to the Q.
The same source says that Stoppy has also long paid money to Quirk to not lease any of his properties in North Braintree along 3A to any supermarket competitors.
More recently, however, there are rumblings that Quirk is planning on a sizeable redevelopment of basically his dealerships parking lot in the former Fore River shipyard and the working plan is slated to include a Market Basket-sized supermarket, a wee bit of other retail, a few dining establishments, and perhaps “some” office space.
What with the auto industry changing to more of an order for delivery model, his parking lot could be viewed as, well, soon to superfluous, not to mention that it was pretty much a land banking use until the time was right for redevelopment in the first place.
Same/same with his auto auction property in West Quincy near Granite Links btw.
There are some not inconsiderable federal waterfront commercial use and especially shipyard use specific restrictions to unwind at the shipyard; however, Quirk is nothing if not a savvy and patient long term real estate developer.
