Governor Charlie Baker came to Quincy on Thursday to open the often delayed and thus long-awaited opening of the Generals Bridge. A Quincy Quarry News file photo
Quincy Center’s Generals Bridge finally open to traffic.
In a rare event, the South Shore broadsheet scooped Quincy Quarry News with its reporting of the opening of Quincy Center’s over-the-top short and latest bridge to nowhere.
Then again as well as needless to say, the Quarry is not on the Koch Maladministration’s photo op press release distribution list.
Even rarer, the bridge’s opening a day before the expected by end of the week soft expectation that the bridge could open up for vehicular use.
Then again, it must be noted that the bridge was originally expected to open last May, only to face all but innumerable and only to be expected delays for most any Koch Maladministarion big busck initiative.
At the same time, while Thursday’s weather was the best day for a photo op during what has otherwise been a bad weather week, the opening ceremony photos included in the South Shore broadsheet’s coverage indicated sparse attendance.
Very sparse attendance, especially if one only reasonably opts to exclude counting Kochster coat holders, bored members of the media, as well as Governor Charlie Baken and his security detail and his aides.
Needless to say, even if factoring in winter weather, this photo op was significantly less grandiose than the upwards of a quarter of a million but more likely even more spent in total on the Generals Bridge and Park dedications over four months ago.
Then again, one can only assume that perhaps the Koch Machine did not want to make a big deal of things as the actual opening of the bridge for use was originally slated for last May and then suffered innumerable other delays until it finally was opened for vehicular use this past Thursday.
In any event, scooped for change notwithstanding, Quincy Quarry News’ ever-growing legions of loyal readers can count on Quincy Quarry to monitor the bridge and so be able to report as soon as possible on the only to be expected pedestrian strikings tied to care of the bridge’s minimal signalization and other sorts of car accidents at the intersection of the General’s Bridge with Burgin Parkway given all manner of troubling problems with its design.

I’ve enjoyed not using this bridge and I intend to continue doing so. As a matter of fact, it will be more enjoyable not using it now that its open.
What won’t be enjoyable will be the additional traffic snarls it will create. It will assist in going around in circles to get back to where you didn’t want to be in the first place. The best bet will be to avoid it completely.
The good news is the bridge has already helped create a few new well-paying low output city jobs for Mayor Koch’s friends and extended family. After all, Lord knows they couldn’t make that sort of money in the dreaded private sector.
