Quincy Center sidewalk disappears during a street makeover.
In what may set a new low tide mark bar for Only in Quincy stories, a Quincy Center sidewalk has disappeared.
As brought to Quincy Quarry’s attention by an alert local Citizen Journalist, when a well past long overdue repaving of a Quincy Center street was given a makeover, one of its two sidewalks was inexplicably not replaced.
Courtesy of Google Maps, Quincy Quarry News is so able to confirm what was done – or, to be more accurate, was not redone.
That and so also raises questions about the City of Quincy perhaps committing an Americans with Disabilities Act civil rights violation.
Then again, as Quincy Quarry’s ever-growing legions of loyal readers know, “(t)he code is more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules.”
So now when I exit the garage I will now have to cross the street to walk up to Quincy College in President’s Place, and then cross again to hit Quincy Square? Or I can ignore the signs in the garage that state “No Pedestrian Traffic?”
Marie, please note that you could exit the garage directly into Presidents Place to do whatever or pass through President Place to then risk your life relying on the so-called and very confusing “Hawk Lights” crosswalk lights on Hancock Street to then schlep your way to — for example — City Hall.
At the same time, it is only proper to note that the now lack of sidewalks on BOTH sides of Saville Avenue does disrupt the possibility of safe foot traffic passing through from — say — the Quincy Center T station to points in the backside of Quincy High area or from the Presidents Place Garage to make a parent/teacher meeting at Quincy High.
If that is, one is not mobility impaired.
Those lights are awful. What a stupid idea. The drivers don’t know when to stop, they don’t know when to go. And a lot of them don’t even care. Same goes for pedestrians. They cross whenever they want. The first thing to do is to put the old style lights back in. Green means go, yellow means proceed with caution, and red means STOP. Then maybe they can fix it so the pedestrian push buttons actually work, instead of being on a timer.
