Loons Hatch for First Time in Over a Century in Southeastern Massachusetts

Loons chicks have hatched for the first time in more than a century in southeastern Massachusetts where they once were common thanks to a long-term effort to restore their traditional nesting grounds, wildlife officials said.

Obviously, these officials from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife as well as from The Biodiversity Research Institute, a Portland, Maine-based group, have never been to Cambridge.

Then again, Common Loons are listed as a species of special concern under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act and thus perhaps these wildlife groups are familiar with the creatures of Cambridge.

In any event, the Loon chicks hatched this spring in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Their parents were relocated from Maine and New York to Lakeville Massachusetts in 2015 by the Biodiversity Research Institute and those loons have finally gotten busy.
