Quincy Quarry Weekly Fish Wrap: The Grim Reaper keeps on reaping.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has wound down enough in New York City that hospital beds are opening up and emergency from out of town healthcare professionals are packing up and heading home – or perhaps on to another hot spot, Massachusetts continues to appear to at best be stuck at the apex of its surge as well as recently been officially named a hot spot.
And as for the bodies pilling up on the funeral pyre, while Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker only properly announced that no one should make any hasty conclusions in the wake of a but relatively modest waning of COVID-19 statistics released in recent days and mostly tabulated over a state holiday three day weekend, Quincy Mayor Tom Koch instead opted to announce on Tuesday that perhaps the apex had been hit locally after a below probabilistic average but two more local deaths were announced on Tuesday via the daily COVID-19 update.
Needless to say, a foot or maybe both of them then ended up in Mayor Koch’s mouth.
Specifically, care of how ten more local deaths were then announced on Wednesday, the second largest number of local COVID-19 deaths reported via the local daily COVID-19 update.
In turn, these ten new deaths work out to a 24% increase in the total number of local COVID-19 pandemic fatalities to date.
Again, “it is better to keep your mouth closed …”
While Quincy Quarry will make no further comment such as the possibility that Mayor Koch might be a jinx or is just tone deaf to an obviously fluid situation fraught with only to be expected ebbs and flows, the Quarry must reiterate that he should have paid heed to his big buddy.
At the same time, however, it is only fair to note that Mayor Koch has yet to duly acknowledge that to date Quincy has been hit with a 70% higher death rate than the statewide rate per 100,000, much less that Quincy is a local COVID-19 hot spot in a hot spot state.
Even more telling, however, apparently even Mayor Koch’s longtime spokesmodel Pinocchio Walkbacker has gone to ground or perhaps may have also finally ran out of ways to endeavor to spin things in spite of the fact that “facts are stubborn things.”
Who knew that even Pinocchio might have a personal tipping point, not that such should be viewed as also having a sense of shame.
After all, it’s not like the Koch Maladministration, much less its designated mouthpiece, have ever been known for comprehensive candor.
