Domestic Alcoholic Beverage Sales Surge.
With watering holes closed, it should come as no great surprise to anyone that domestic retail sales of alcoholic beverages have soared during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to market research firm Nielsen, per a recent week’s sales data recap, spirits such as tequila, gin and pre-mixed cocktails led the way with sales jumping 75% compared to the same period last year.
Wine sales similarly surged with a 66% increase.
Beer sales, however, were only up by 42%, something which Quincy Quarry suspects has something to do with the shutting down of all sporting events.
And for a first time change in the point of purchase which has long long hurt many other sorts of retail store operators, the rate of increase for online sales far outpaced the increase of in-store sales.
Not clear, however, is if the closing of high schools for the duration of the pandemic may have played a role in the dramatic swing to no personal contact transactions.
Fortunately, unlike toilet paper, so far both supplies of adult libations as well as their supply chains are meeting demand even if there are a few spot shortages of mostly limited production items.
